Big Dutchman to complete large-scale broiler project in Zimbabwe

Facility designed for 30,000 birds is now operational.

ZIMBABWE – Big Dutchman Southern Africa has finalized a turnkey broiler project in Zimbabwe that includes a housing facility with the capacity to hold up to 30,000 chickens.

The development covers every phase of construction, from building the structures to fitting advanced feeding, drinking, and ventilation systems designed to meet international standards.

According to the company, the facility has been equipped to improve production efficiency and support smooth operations for poultry farmers.

The model used is designed to optimize bird performance by aligning nutrition and environmental controls with industry requirements.

It also introduces management systems that simplify daily tasks for farmers, while integrating technologies aimed at using fewer resources during production.

This project adds to Big Dutchman’s portfolio in Southern Africa and comes at a time when poultry farming remains a key contributor to food supply in the region.

Market context

Data from 2021 shows that Zimbabwe’s chicken consumption stood at 7.33 kilograms per person, placing the country 124th out of 165 globally in per capita terms.

Projections indicate that overall poultry meat consumption will decline slightly by 0.7 percent by 2026, dropping to around 66,200 metric tons from 2021 levels.

At the same time, poultry meat production in Zimbabwe is forecast to expand by 0.8 percent between 2021 and 2026, suggesting a gradual strengthening of local output despite the dip in demand.

Imports and trade

By 2023, Zimbabwe was ranked the 134th largest importer of poultry meat in the world, with imports valued at US$12.4 million.

The country sourced most of its poultry products from neighboring South Africa and Namibia, reflecting regional trade ties in the sector.

Industry analysts note that while consumption levels are flattening, the steady growth in domestic production points to ongoing investment and efforts to secure local supply.

The completion of the new broiler facility is expected to contribute to this trend, as it provides infrastructure aligned with both commercial needs and long-term sustainability goals.
