Camposol opens new biofactory to boost blueberry production

The company aims to speed up plant development and secure enough seedlings for future growth.

PERU – Camposol has opened a new biotechnology facility in Peru to support its growing blueberry program.

Camposol continues to increase its focus on blueberries and wants to raise output through stronger plant material and better control over its supply. The company opened a 21,500 square foot biofactory in Chao, Viru in Trujillo, Peru.

The new building brings in vitro and ex vitro propagation into one space and can produce up to 5 million blueberry plants each year.

Earlier this year, Camposol said it plans to replace almost half of its blueberry fields with varieties that give higher yields and stronger quality. The company wants to do this while also growing its total production area. This new site gives it room to grow without delays tied to sourcing enough seedlings from outside producers.

The in vitro area will focus on plant development and propagation. Teams will use conventional techniques and bioreactors while keeping to traditional non GMO breeding practices. Camposol believes this setup will help it improve varieties at a steady pace.

The ex vitro phase uses a growth chamber system where staff control temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide levels, and lighting. They use these controls to help seedlings adapt before they move to nurseries and later into commercial fields. This process aims to reduce losses at early stages and keep plant quality high.

Ricardo Naranjo, the CEO of Camposol, said the new building aligns with long term plans for the business. He stated that the facility gives the company “a strategic advantage” as it works to develop and multiply new fruit varieties.

He added that “With this new infrastructure, we strengthen our position as a solid, innovative agro-industrial company that is prepared to continue growing in a sustainable manner. It gives us independence and the ability to ensure the availability of the plants needed to execute our strategic expansion and consolidation plan.”

Camposol also continues to update its broader operations. The company recently confirmed that it will direct more resources to support new genetics and quality upgrades across its fruit portfolio. It plans to keep improving its supply chain so it can reach customers with more consistent volumes throughout the year.

These plans include steady investment in technology and field renewal programs across Peru and other regions.

The new biofactory marks a major step in this wider plan and brings the company closer to its goal of securing dependable plant material for its future growth path.
