Ethiopian agriculture minister visits Joytech’s modern growing facility

The visit highlighted Ethiopia’s focus on technology-driven farming and closer ties between commercial farms and smallholders.

ETHIOPIA – The Ethiopian Minister of Agriculture, H.E. Ato Addisu Arega, recently toured Joytech PLC’s modern agricultural facilities in Bishoftu, including its tissue culture laboratory, propagation units, and packing and processing areas.

The visit marked a key moment for Ethiopia’s growing agri-tech sector, which is fast gaining attention for its potential to improve food production and farmer livelihoods.

During the visit, Joytech showcased its high-technology hydroponic development project, a system designed to grow crops efficiently using controlled environments.

Company officials briefed the minister on the project’s progress and discussed how such technology-driven models can help boost productivity and modernize Ethiopia’s agriculture.

“Constructive discussions were held on ways to further support such transformative investments, which play a pivotal role in modernizing Ethiopia’s agricultural sector, enhancing productivity, and integrating advanced technologies into farming systems,” the company stated.

Minister Addisu stressed that progress in agriculture must benefit both commercial producers and smallholder farmers. “Collaboration between modern commercial farms and smallholder farmers is a key driver for achieving inclusive growth, improved productivity, and sustainable agricultural development nationwide,” he said.

His remarks echoed the government’s broader agenda of using partnerships and innovation to build stronger and more inclusive value chains.

Joytech PLC, founded in 2003 by Riaz Hossen Joy, has built its reputation as one of Ethiopia’s most advanced agribusinesses. Based near Addis Ababa, the company produces aromatic herbs, leafy greens, vegetables, and cut flowers using hydroponic and vertical farming systems.

Its operations combine technology with sustainable practices and maintain high standards that align with European food safety requirements.

Integrating modern systems into traditional farming

Joytech’s integration of temperature-controlled vertical farms and tissue culture propagation has positioned it as a pioneer in Ethiopia’s agricultural modernization.

The company’s model links advanced farming technology with smallholder networks, helping farmers improve yields and access high-value markets. Its facilities also serve as training grounds for agricultural professionals and students interested in hydroponic systems.

Joytech’s commitment to sustainability and innovation continues to draw attention from policymakers and investors. Its recent engagement with the Ministry of Agriculture highlights Ethiopia’s growing interest in building a more efficient, technology-based farming sector that supports both local food needs and export opportunities.

As Ethiopia seeks to strengthen its agricultural base, collaborations like this are setting the pace for a more productive and inclusive future. “Joytech’s work shows how technology can be integrated into farming to create real impact for both producers and consumers,” a ministry official noted at the close of the visit.
