The machine promises durability, operator safety, and efficiency for high-yield plantations.

SOUTH AFRICA – John Deere has announced the introduction of the 2144G Swing Machine, a tracked harvester designed specifically for Southern Africa’s forestry industry.
Built in Brazil and proven in the field, the machine answers the growing needs of eucalyptus and pine plantations across the region.
The 2144G was developed around Fast Growing High Yield plantation systems, which form the backbone of both Brazilian and South African forestry.
Its engineering makes it capable of handling tough harvesting cycles while working seamlessly with Waratah European harvesting heads.
Operators can choose between two-roller options such as the H216E, H216, and H219, or four-roller heads including the H424, H425, and H425HD.
“This machine reflects the realities of our plantations,” said a John Deere spokesperson. “It brings the reliability and flexibility needed to maintain high efficiency whether in eucalyptus or pine stands.”
Comfort and safety for operators
John Deere emphasized operator well-being as a central feature of the 2144G. The cab has ROPS/FOPS/OPS certification, offering maximum protection during long shifts. An air-ride suspension seat, ergonomic controls, and climate control help reduce fatigue.
Operators also benefit from wide visibility and an easy-to-read monitor that provides real-time performance data.
“Productivity starts with people,” the spokesperson added. “When operators are safe and comfortable, they can deliver the best results.”
Built for harsh conditions
The machine’s durability stands out in its construction. It features a rugged boom-to-mainframe interface with large-diameter pins that extend the boom’s working life.
The nine-roller track frame and optional heavy-duty chain enhance stability while minimizing wear. John Deere also backs the structure with a 10,000-hour warranty.
At the core, the 2144G runs on the John Deere PowerTech Plus 6.8L engine, which balances strength and fuel economy.
The engine includes a hydraulic reversing fan to automatically clear debris, large-capacity coolers to lower hydraulic temperatures, and three selectable modes, Economy, Power, and High Productivity, allowing operators to adapt performance at the push of a button.
With a 585-litre fuel tank and an integrated chain oil reservoir, the harvester works longer hours with fewer interruptions. Ground-level service points and accessible filters simplify maintenance, reducing downtime.
Financing and regional support
Recognizing the investment required in forestry operations, John Deere is offering financing through John Deere Financial. The program allows businesses to access payment solutions that fit their growth and cash-flow needs.
Customers also gain the advantage of a regional dealer network that ensures reliable service and parts support.
“Every customer has different needs,” the company noted. “Our financing solutions and strong dealer presence help make sure their operations stay productive.”
Broader industry developments
The launch of the 2144G comes at a time when Southern Africa’s forestry sector is adapting to rising demand for sustainable wood products.
John Deere continues to expand its product line across the region, complementing earlier launches such as the 859MH tracked harvester and the E-series skidders.
Industry experts believe the new harvester strengthens John Deere’s role in Southern Africa’s forestry sector.
By focusing on operator comfort, machine durability, and smart efficiency, the company has set its sights on supporting the long-term growth of plantation forestry in the region.
