Kenya launches new support programme for avocado farmers in Makueni

Initiative aims to boost yields, quality, and market access for smallholder growers.

KENYA – Kenya’s avocado farmers in Makueni County are set to benefit as Imara Avocado Factory rolls out a new support programme designed to strengthen the country’s avocado sector.

The announcement came during the Makueni Avocado Farmers Day 2025, highlighting the company’s commitment to helping small-scale growers improve production and access lucrative markets.

Director Nelson Kamwaro said the programme focuses on giving farmers the tools and knowledge needed to grow avocados that meet global standards. “Our goal is to ensure that Makueni farmers not only have a reliable market for their produce but also the tools and knowledge to grow premium-quality avocados that meet global standards,” Kamwaro explained.

The initiative includes direct purchases from registered farmers with clear pricing to reduce reliance on middlemen. Farmers will also receive financial assistance to acquire certified seedlings, helping them expand orchards and increase productivity.

In addition, the company will offer hands-on agronomy training covering cultivation techniques, post-harvest handling, irrigation, crop nutrition, and sustainability practices.

Strengthening market presence

Kenya’s avocado exports continue to enjoy strong demand in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, creating opportunities for smallholder growers to participate in international markets.

Kamwaro emphasized the importance of partnerships, saying, “Strong partnerships with farmers are the backbone of every successful agricultural value chain.” He added that better coordination between farmers and processors could help regions such as Makueni expand their presence in export markets.

The programme is also exploring collaborations with other counties and agricultural agencies to support sustainable production practices, maintain traceability, and safeguard Kenya’s reputation as a trusted supplier of avocado products.

This move aligns with growing efforts to strengthen Kenya’s avocado industry through innovation and farmer-focused interventions. By providing direct support and improving coordination across the supply chain, the programme aims to increase smallholder participation while promoting consistent quality and reliable market access.

Farmers in Makueni welcomed the announcement, noting that such initiatives could transform livelihoods and encourage more sustainable practices. With rising global demand, Kenya’s small-scale growers are now better positioned to benefit from the international market while maintaining high standards in production.
