Nigeria commits US$29.62M to Kaduna ginger processing hub

The Federal Government and Kaduna State will jointly fund a US$29.62 million ginger production and processing hub in Kachia.

NIGERIA – The Federal Government of Nigeria and the Kaduna State Government have concluded plans to establish a ₦40 billion (US$29.62 million) ginger production and processing hub in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

Senator Sunday Katung, who represents Kaduna South Senatorial District, said the Kaduna State Government has committed ₦20 billion, equivalent to US$14.81 million, while the Federal Government will provide the remaining ₦20 billion (US$14.81 million). He said the project supports efforts to grow agro industry and reduce reliance on oil revenue.

“The establishment of this ₦40 billion ginger production and processing hub in Kachia is a historic milestone for the Kaduna South Senatorial District. When completed, it will position our district as a global player in the ginger value chain,” Katung said.

Boosting production and jobs

The facility will focus on expanding ginger production, cutting post harvest losses, and increasing value addition. Officials expect it to become the largest ginger processing hub in Africa after completion.

Katung said the project will create jobs and raise incomes in rural communities. “This project is not just about ginger; it is about jobs, rural industrialisation, wealth creation, and restoring hope to our farming communities. Our farmers will move beyond selling raw produce to value addition, processing, and export,” he stated.

He added that the investment supports the economic diversification agenda of President Bola Tinubu and aligns with the development plans of Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani.

“This initiative reflects the strong collaboration between the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government. Governor Uba Sani’s inclusive leadership has continued to attract transformative federal projects to Southern Kaduna,” Katung said.

Health and education projects expand

Beyond agriculture, Katung highlighted other developments in the district. Authorities have established the Federal University of Applied Sciences in Kachia and plan to site a College of Medicine in Manchok. Officials have also upgraded Sir Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa Memorial Hospital in Kafanchan to a Federal Medical Centre.

Katung further disclosed a five year partnership with United States based humanitarian organisation Project C.U.R.E. to supply medical equipment valued at about ₦8 billion, equivalent to US$5.92 million, to general hospitals across the district.

“Through this partnership, we are bringing in modern medical equipment and supplies that will strengthen healthcare delivery and improve outcomes for our people,” he said.

He urged residents to promote unity during the ongoing Lenten and Ramadan seasons, noting that both periods offer a time for reflection and community support.
