Olam Agri launches ‘Raising Generations Initiative’ to empower Ghanaian communities

The programme is set to train approximately 400 bakers within its first year, with plans for sustained annual growth.

GHANA – Olam Agri, a global leader in food, feed, and fibre agri-business, has unveiled its flagship sustainability program, the Raising Generations Initiative, aimed at fostering economic growth and community empowerment in Ghana.

The launch, held at Olam Agri’s grains facility in Kpone, was attended by notable figures, including Mr. Iddrisu Haruna, Minister of Education, and Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe, Director-General of the Ghana Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Service.

The initiative’s cornerstone projects include a state-of-the-art baking school in partnership with Ghana TVET and a transformative scholarship scheme for the dependents of bakers. The baking school will offer a comprehensive curriculum blending theoretical knowledge with hands-on training, emphasizing the science of baking and introducing participants to cutting-edge industry advancements.

The program is designed to spark creativity, enhance skills, and promote continuous improvement, enabling trainees to produce high-quality baked goods.

This initiative is a cornerstone of our commitment to Ghana’s sustainable development. The Raising Generations Initiative allows us to invest holistically in the skills and capabilities of local bakers, strengthening the food industry while empowering families and communities over the long term,” said Baibhav Biswas, Country Head of Olam Agri in Ghana.

In its inaugural year, the baking school aims to train approximately 400 bakers, with plans for sustained growth in subsequent years. Graduates will receive official certification from Ghana TVET, providing formal recognition and opening doors to enhanced career opportunities in the baking sector.

Echoing the program’s broader impact, Dr. Eric Kofi Adzroe noted that the importance of this collaboration extends beyond improving baking standards. It is about empowering individuals to become entrepreneurs and creators of their own economic futures.

“Many of our graduates will not only find employment but will also be equipped with the skills and knowledge to start their own businesses. This is the essence of vocational training—to provide a way to self-sufficiency and economic growth,” he said.

Alongside the baking school, Olam Agri has introduced a scholarship scheme to further extend its impact. Under this arrangement, two dependents of each participating baker will be awarded full scholarships to tertiary institutions of their choice, targeting approximately 108 scholarships in the first year. By opening educational pathways, the programme aims to support families well beyond the bakery trade.

Minister of Education Iddrisu Haruna commended the initiative, noting its alignment with national educational priorities.

“We welcome Olam Agri’s bold contribution to Ghana’s educational transformation agenda. We believe that this initiative will strengthen the vocational pathways for these children and provide a transformative opportunity for their families. It is this kind of private-sector commitment that truly aligns with our national goals for inclusive and equitable education,” he said.

With its combination of technical training and family-focused support, the Raising Generations Initiative is positioned to deliver long-lasting benefits to Ghana’s baking industry and the wider community, ensuring that the skills and opportunities created today will uplift generations to come.
