SOUTH AFRICA – South Africa’s canola industry is celebrating a record-breaking season, with 2025 projections indicating a 10-15% increase in yields over last year’s historic harvest.
According to the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, the 2024 season saw a 25% surge in production, marking the largest canola output ever recorded.
In November 2024, Southern Oil celebrated farmers as the canola harvest that year exceeded expectations.
This momentum is fueling optimism across the agricultural value chain, from farmers and processors to retailers and feed manufacturers.
The success is attributed to favorable weather conditions, improved seed varieties, and strategic investments in processing infrastructure.
Canola, typically harvested between October and November, is now a cornerstone crop in the Western Cape and other key farming regions.
Once harvested, seeds are cleaned, crushed, and separated into refined oil (42–44%) and protein-rich meal (56%), with minimal waste.
Diverse applications drive market growth
Refined canola oil is widely used in cooking oils, dressings, and sauces, supplying local brands such as B-Well.
Additionally, residual meals and oil are essential components in animal feed, particularly for dairy and poultry production.
The protein content, fiber, and amino acids in canola meal have contributed to improved livestock yields, reinforcing its value in the feed sector.
Processing innovation & sustainability
Local processors like Southern Oil have gained a competitive edge by investing in high-efficiency vegetable oil crushers, enhancing product quality and reducing waste.
These innovations have strengthened South Africa’s position in the global Agri-processing landscape, offering a viable alternative to imported oils.
Canola farming also contributes positively to soil health through crop rotation, as it helps replenish nitrogen levels, making farmland more fertile for subsequent crops.
Zero-waste operations at processing facilities ensure that every part of the seed is utilized, reused, or upcycled, aligning with circular economy principles.
Strategic partnerships & market confidence
Rising consumer demand for locally sourced, traceable, and ethically produced ingredients has accelerated canola’s market expansion.
Collaborations between processors and retailers, such as Southern Oil’s partnership with Woolworths, are driving innovation in food products and reinforcing consumer trust.
With just weeks until the 2025 harvest begins, South Africa’s canola sector is not only delivering record yields but also redefining agricultural resilience, sustainability, and economic impact.
The record-breaking yields and industry innovations are shaping a promising future for the country’s agricultural landscape, offering a model for growth and resilience in the face of changing environmental conditions.
