GLOBAL – Container shipping reliability has shown a notable improvement globally, according to the latest Global Liner Performance report.
The report, compiled by maritime consultancy Sea-Intelligence, reveals a significant month-on-month increase of 3.8 percentage points, reaching 55.8% in May 2024, marking the highest figure this year.
The latest data indicates a positive trend in global schedule reliability, showcasing a month-on-month rise of 3.8 percentage points.
This increase, documented in the Global Liner Performance report by Sea-Intelligence, underscores improvements in container shipping operations worldwide.
Despite this positive development, challenges persist within the industry, particularly regarding the enforceability of shipper/carrier contracts amidst fluctuating freight rates.
A critical concern highlighted in the report is the enforceability of shipper/carrier contracts amid volatile freight rates.
As freight costs continue to escalate, there are growing calls for carriers to adhere to contractual agreements rather than pursuing maximum revenue.
Analysts argue that maintaining contract fidelity during periods of rate hikes could potentially foster greater loyalty from shippers when market conditions eventually stabilize.
The report also assesses the performance of major carriers, revealing notable shifts in reliability rankings.
CMA CGM emerged as the top-performing carrier in May 2024 with a reliability score of 57.1%, followed closely by Evergreen.
Notably, Maersk has improved its position significantly, moving up to third place from a lower ranking previously.
Figures from Sea-Intelligence illustrate the financial implications of rate management strategies among major carriers
Maersk, for instance, demonstrated a cautious approach to rate increases during the pandemic, which did not reciprocally benefit them when market conditions later declined.
In contrast, carriers that adopted more aggressive pricing strategies outperformed in revenue generation, highlighting a disconnect in loyalty dynamics between carriers and shippers.
