DP World launches Dubai Food District to expand food trade and supply

The new hub will grow the Al Aweer market into a large centre for food trade, logistics, and processing across the region.

UAE – Dubai has launched the Dubai Food District, a major expansion of the Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market that aims to improve how food moves, trades, and reaches consumers across the region.

DP World unveiled the project on Thursday, January 22, 2026, marking a new step in Dubai’s food trade strategy. The district will expand in phases, with the first phase set to begin in 2027. When completed, it will cover about 29 million square feet and more than double the size of the existing market.

His Excellency Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, Group Chairman and CEO of DP World, said, “Dubai Food District strengthens Dubai’s leadership in food trade by bringing world-class infrastructure, global connectivity and advanced logistics together in one location. We’re enabling farmers, producers and traders to reach new markets faster, more efficiently and more sustainably.”

Expanding the Al Aweer market

The Al Aweer Central Fruit and Vegetable Market opened in 2004 and has grown into one of the region’s leading food markets. It supports more than 2,500 traders who supply fresh produce across the UAE and beyond.

The new district will build on this base while widening its scope. It will serve fruits and vegetables, dairy, gourmet foods, staples, and specialty products. Officials say the expansion will improve speed to market and reduce risks in supply chains for food businesses.

The district will bring trade, storage, processing, and distribution into one connected system. It will include cold storage, temperature-controlled warehouses, processing facilities, digital back-office tools, cash-and-carry services, and a gourmet food hall.

Abdulla Bin Damithan, CEO and Managing Director of DP World GCC, said, “With global food demand on the rise and supply chains under strain, Dubai Food District is a critical investment. It’s designed to support the UAE’s industrial strategy while driving long-term economic impact.”

Trade links and regional impact

The district’s location will connect producers and traders to more than 20 markets worldwide through DP World’s logistics network. Officials say this structure will help businesses reach new markets while improving reliability and cost efficiency.

Dubai first announced the project in July 2024 under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. Authorities now see the district as a key platform for regional food trade and supply stability.

DP World will present the Dubai Food District during Gulfood 2026 at Gulfood Fresh and Logistics North Hall 12 stand GG.H2.

Officials say the district will help ensure steady food supply for businesses and households across the region. As one executive noted, “When systems work well, traders move goods faster and communities feel the benefit in daily life.”
