Tanmiah Food, Strataphy launch MENA’s first geothermal-cooled poultry farm

The pilot project aims to reduce energy use in poultry farming through geothermal cooling technology.

SAUDI ARABIA – Tanmiah Food Company has teamed up with geothermal technology firm Strataphy to establish the first poultry facility in the MENA region cooled entirely using geothermal energy at Tanmiah’s Shaqrah site.

The announcement was made during an award ceremony organized by the Saudi AgriFood Tech Alliance, attended by His Excellency Eng. Mansour Hilal Al Mushaiti, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, alongside company executives and industry guests.

The project introduces a cooling system that relies on the stable temperatures beneath the Earth’s surface, reducing dependence on conventional energy-intensive air conditioning systems and offering an alternative suited to Saudi Arabia’s high-heat climate.

Under Strataphy’s Cooling as a Service model, the technology will be implemented without requiring upfront capital, allowing Tanmiah to pay predictable operational costs while Strataphy handles design, drilling, installation, and ongoing maintenance with guaranteed performance.

According to Tanmiah CEO Zulfiqar Hamadani, the partnership demonstrates the company’s effort to integrate environmentally conscious practices into its operations while maintaining economic efficiency.

Strataphy CEO Ammar Alali stated that the deployment addresses the high energy demand for cooling in hot climates and positions Saudi Arabia as a potential leader in scalable, low-carbon agricultural technology.

Chief Strategy Officer at Tanmiah, Muhammad Abbas Khan, added that the pilot will inform the expansion of geothermal cooling across Tanmiah’s network of farms, with the potential to reshape poultry production economics throughout the region.

Energy data shows that over 70 percent of electricity consumed in Saudi buildings is used for cooling, highlighting the significance of alternative systems that reduce grid load and greenhouse gas emissions.

Tanmiah Food Company, founded in 1962, operates more than 150 farms, seven hatcheries, four feed mills, and four processing plants in Saudi Arabia, with products sold across the Gulf Cooperation Council region and through online channels.

The company is part of the Al-Dabbagh Holding Group and applies sustainability measures including wastewater recycling, converting waste into fertilizer, and a tree-planting program targeting one million trees, reflecting a broader commitment to environmentally responsible practices.

The Shaqrah geothermal cooling pilot is being positioned as a strategic step toward wider decarbonization in the Kingdom’s agri-food sector and as a model for energy-efficient food production that could be replicated across similar markets.
