Te Mata Exports founding director Murray Tait to Retire

NEW ZEALAND – Murray Tait, the founding director of Te Mata Exports, is retiring after a distinguished career of more than two decades.

Tait launched the company in 2000, and under his stewardship, Te Mata Exports has grown into a key player in the global fresh produce market.

Founded in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, Te Mata Exports began as a small local enterprise and expanded its reach to Australia, Japan, and Vietnam.

Tait’s leadership was instrumental in the company’s growth, particularly in the apple export sector. By 2010, Tait sold a stake in the business to Market Gardeners (MG Group), a New Zealand grower-owned cooperative, who are now the majority shareholders.

Earlier this year, he sold his remaining shares, with current CEO Sarah McCormack and Paul Sheffer also holding a stake.

Peter Hendry, MG Group chief executive, praised Tait’s contributions, saying, “Murray’s impact on Te Mata Exports and the wider industry has been exceptional. His vision and commitment have built a strong foundation for the company’s future success. We are thankful for his dedication and the legacy he leaves behind.”

Tait has recently been assisting Te Mata Exports in a consultancy role, providing valuable insights and guidance.

Sarah McCormack, the current CEO, expressed her admiration for Tait’s work, stating, “It has been a privilege to work with Murray. His dedication to the industry and his ability to build lasting relationships with growers and customers are unparalleled. We wish him the best in his well-deserved retirement.”

Tait himself expressed confidence in the company’s future. “It has been an incredible journey,” he said.

“I believe Te Mata Exports will continue to thrive under Sarah’s leadership and the wider team’s efforts. I’m also grateful for the many great growers and customers I’ve had the pleasure of working with over the years.”

As Tait steps down, Te Mata Exports is poised to continue its growth trajectory. The company remains well-positioned with its operations in New Zealand and Australia, and team members in Japan and Vietnam.

Known for exporting high-quality apples, cherries, citrus, and vegetables, Te Mata Exports has established itself as a trusted name in the fresh produce industry.

Based in the fruit-rich Hawke’s Bay region, Te Mata Exports will continue to support a diverse range of growers and international customers, ensuring its legacy of excellence endures.
