UM6P, OCP Foundation sign pact to support Morocco’s agriculture sector

The agreement links research, training, and public policy to help Morocco respond to climate risks and strengthen food systems.

MOROCCO – Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) and the OCP Foundation have signed a partnership agreement with Morocco’s Ministries of Agriculture and Economy to support the country’s agriculture sector and improve food systems.

The agreement brings together academic research, training, and public policy to respond to climate pressure and structural challenges in agriculture. A statement from the Ministry of Agriculture said the partnership fits within Morocco’s national agricultural strategy, Generation Green 2020–2030.

“The agreement specifically seeks to contribute to strengthening the kingdom’s food sovereignty and support public agricultural policies through better use of scientific and technological advances,” the ministry said.

Officials said the partners will work on solutions that address climate change effects while building local expertise. They also said the collaboration will support inclusive growth in agriculture and encourage knowledge sharing with other countries, especially in Africa.

Representatives of the institutions involved said they share a clear goal: to support agriculture that meets social, economic, and environmental needs.

“All parties reaffirm their commitment to a more inclusive and innovative agricultural sector that can respond to future needs,” the statement added.

Priority areas for action

The partnership will focus on several technical and training areas that matter for farmers and policymakers. These include soil health, climate resilience, applied agronomic research, agricultural training, and integrated water management. The partners also plan to support agri-tech solutions developed in Morocco.

By linking universities, foundations, and government institutions, the agreement aims to shorten the gap between research and practice. Stakeholders expect the initiative to strengthen cooperation between science, policy, and field-level action.

The collaboration also seeks to expand cooperation with other African countries. Officials said Morocco intends to share expertise and experience in agricultural development with regional partners.

“The partnership aims to develop operational responses to climate change while valuing national expertise and strengthening South–South cooperation,” the ministry said.

Broader context and next steps

The agreement comes at a time when climate pressure, water scarcity, and food security concerns continue to shape Morocco’s agricultural agenda. By aligning research institutions with national policy goals, the partners aim to support practical solutions that can reach farmers and communities.

In recent months, Morocco has also stepped up efforts to deepen cooperation with African partners and strengthen regional agricultural systems. The new agreement fits within that broader direction, with a focus on shared knowledge and joint action.

Observers say the partnership could play a key role in connecting science, training, and policy in Morocco’s agriculture sector. If implemented as planned, it could help the country improve resilience, strengthen food systems, and support sustainable growth in agriculture.
