Tshisekedi flags off 2025–2026 agricultural season in Menkao

President hands over tractors and equipment to boost food production across 26 provinces

DRC – President Felix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo on Thursday officially opened the 2025–2026 agricultural campaign in Menkao, about fifty kilometers from Kinshasa.

The launch took place in the commune of Maluku in front of farmers, planters, agricultural staff, and several senior government officials.

The President symbolically handed over a fleet of tractors and agricultural equipment destined for the 26 provinces of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The move signals government’s push to strengthen food production and reduce dependence on imports.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of State in charge of Agriculture and Food Security, Muhindo Nzangi, stressed that government funding had reached a historic level.

“The Government of the Republic has allocated 10% of the national budget to the agriculture sector, which corresponds to Maputo’s commitment to food self-sufficiency,” he said.

Nzangi also outlined five priority goals for the season. These include ensuring farmers receive improved seeds, quality fertilizers, and pesticides, while also focusing on the training and development of agricultural agents.

Farmers welcome the initiative

Farmers and agronomists present praised President Tshisekedi for acting on his vision of turning the country into a strong agricultural producer. “It is time for the soil to take revenge on the subsoil,” they said, highlighting the country’s potential to rely on farming rather than only its mineral wealth.

At the same time, they raised concerns over growing insecurity in the Bateke plateau, a fertile area that serves as the main food basket for Kinshasa. The presence of the Mobondo militia has disrupted farming activities and affected yields.

Deputy Minister of the Interior in charge of Customary Affairs, Mwami Ndeze, responded to these concerns with a pledge of support. “The customary authority will stand with farmers to ensure peace in Menkao and surrounding areas,” he assured.

AfDB reaffirms support

International partners also marked their presence at the launch. A representative of the African Development Bank (AfDB) confirmed that the institution would continue to finance agriculture in the DRC.

“The DRC is the largest beneficiary of the African Development Fund, and we are committed to supporting its agricultural transformation with a large portfolio,” he said.

The 2025–2026 season represents a renewed effort to place agriculture at the center of the country’s growth strategy. With tractors distributed, budget allocations made, and external partners pledging support, farmers hope this momentum will translate into higher yields and greater food security.
